2004 - THE COGSWELL YEARS INTERVIEW

The following are a series of excepts of a film interview I gave to a film student when I was at the Henry Cogswell College in Everett, WA in 2004. (Note: I have sadly forgotten the name of the student, so if anyone can let me know his name I will gladly credit him here.)

2004 - IN THE BEGINNING

How I got into animation in the first place.

2004 - THE HALAS & BATCHELOR YEARS

The first animation studio I worked for.

2004 - AT THE RICHARD WILLIAMS STUDIO

The special time that transformed my career.

2004 - CREATING 'HOKUSAI' AND LEARNING WITH RICHARD WILLIAMS

Further adventures at the Richard Williams studio.

2004 - MORE ON RICHARD WILLIAMS AND THE PINK PANTHER TITLES

How it all came about.

2004 - SELLING THE PINK PANTHER TITLES TO DIRECTOR  BLAKE EDWARDS

My favorite production story.

2004 - END OF MY RICHARD WILLIAMS STUDIO YEARS

My transition towards setting up my own studio in London.

2004 - ANIMUS PRODUCTIONS AND THE UK SCENE AT THE TIME

Struggling against the British culture for animation.

2004 - HOW I STARTED TEACHING

A big departure for me from production.

2004 - TEACHING DUTIES AT COGSWELL

A day in the life of a busy academic!

2004 - 'ENDANGERED SPECIES' & 'PENCILS TO PIXELS'

My flowing creativity.

2004 - ATELIER

The dream of building an Atelier system, linking production with education.

2004 - MORE ON ATELIER AND THE UNDERLYING COGSWELL PHILOSOPHY

Sadly, within two years after this interview was recorded 'politics' began to rear its ugly head at Cogswell and the program became badly mismanaged - resulting in the school being closed soon after that. (Even though the animation department was thriving and profitable under Ken Rowe's leadership at the time!) However, as the worst of this began to occur I was head-hunted by DigiPen Institute of Technology and I had moved on before the school was finally closed.

2004 ANOTHER COGSWELL INTERVIEW

An introduction to the making of my short film, 'Endangered Species'.

2008 - LECTURE

Excerpt of lecture on 'Personality Walks' at DigiPen Institute of Technology.

2010 - CHINA LECTURE TOUR

In 2010 I was invited over to the Jilin Institute of Animation, in Chanchun, China to deliver a series of lectures. It was a wonderful time and a wonderful experience for me. The event was not recorded by here are a couple of cel phone videos that did survive - plus a much more embarrassing video of me at the closing party!.

2010 - BODY LEAN ON A RUNNING STRIDE

A very brief glimpse of my giving advice on the changing body lean as a character goes through a stride action in a run - the translator repeats what I am saying to the 300 sized audience afterwards.

2010 - FOOT DRAG

Suggestions on how to put in foot drag on a reluctant, tired or lazy character walking.

2010 - CHARADES

The hospitality of our Chinese hosts was fabulous, with never a dull moment during the entire trip. Our feet barely touched the ground! This follows the last night's great celebration that took place on a large hotel conference room. Each of the invited guests were required to do a forfeit, or challenge, to entertain the audience. Mine was to take part in a series of mimed charades - with a member of the Chinese contingent having to guess the word I was attempting to communicate. Here, I'm afraid to say, are the results of that challenge - hosted by great friend and host, Gavin.
Keeping the magic of traditional 2D animation alive!
